Claiming the prophetic gift for himself, he was joined by the two women, who also prophesied in an ecstatic state.25 Because no writings of Montanus and his two prophetesses have been preserved,26 the sources for understanding the earliest developments of this movement are the writings of the early church fathers. Two of the earliest and most helpful sources are (1)
